Some resorts impress you with size. The Crowne Plaza Phoenix Chandler Golf Resort won me over with something better: a sense of place. I spent a night there in September on a hosted stay for two, and it felt like the kind of resort Arizona has loved for generations, because it is one. This is the San Marcos, the first golf resort in Arizona, opened in 1912 in the heart of what is now downtown Chandler.
The welcome matched the setting. The staff were friendly in the easy, genuine way that makes a grand resort feel personal: pointing us toward the courtyard, asking about the drive, making sure the morning breakfast plan was sorted before we ever reached the room. It set the tone for the entire stay.

A Suite With Room to Live
Our king suite was spacious in a way hotel rooms rarely are anymore. The bed is the headline: big, plush, and honestly the kind you sink into and quietly cancel your plans for. A separate living area gave us a real place to land, with a sofa for slow mornings and a coffee table that collected everything from room keys to camera gear. There is a proper desk as well, which any creator will tell you becomes mission control on a stay like this.
Dakota claimed the king bed first. Fair enough.

The bathroom is all marble, bright and polished, with a wide counter and mirror lighting that makes getting ready feel like an occasion. And the next morning finished the stay the way every good resort stay should: with a relaxed breakfast for two before we even thought about the drive home.

Palm Trees and a Century of Stories
The palm tree courtyard, quiet in the morning light.
Step outside and the resort shows its age in the best possible way. The grounds unfold around a palm tree courtyard, all shade and soft light, and the whole property carries the calm of a place that has hosted a century of Arizona evenings. The San Marcos opened in 1912, the year Arizona became a state, built by Dr. Alexander Chandler in the town that carries his name. Its golf course was the first in Arizona with grass greens, the resort is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and presidents and Hollywood stars once came here for the winter sun. The course, a short walk from the lobby, is fresh off a 3.9 million dollar renovation, so the history now comes with perfect greens. You feel the layers everywhere: in the courtyard palms, in the wide hallways, in the way the building sits so naturally at the center of downtown.
Inside, the details keep the history alive. There is a glass wine cellar stocked wall to wall, and the bar pours under a menu that simply reads 1912, the year it all began. Ordering a cocktail there feels like a small toast to the place itself.

The Location Is the Star
Here is my favorite part, and it is not inside the resort at all. The Crowne Plaza San Marcos anchors downtown Chandler, a lively historic square with more than two dozen independent restaurants, boutique shops, and bars. Dinner, drinks, a nightcap: all of it is an easy walk or a very short hop from the front door. We loved ending the night out and being back at the resort in minutes, no car and no fuss. Scottsdale and Phoenix have their scenes, but downtown Chandler has a charm of its own, and this resort sits right at the center of it. Great location. I absolutely loved it.

Made for Weddings and Big Days
We arrived to find a wedding taking place, and honestly it told me everything about what this resort does best. The event spaces sit right by the lobby, so the celebration energy spills into the heart of the hotel in the happiest way: guests dressed to the nines, music drifting over the courtyard, the whole place glowing. The resort offers more than 30,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and between the palm courtyard, the historic bones, and a team that clearly knows how to run a big day, it is easy to see why couples choose it. If you are planning a wedding or an event in the Valley, put this one on your list and go see it dressed up for a Saturday.
Final Thoughts
The Crowne Plaza Phoenix Chandler Golf Resort is a grand old Arizona resort that still knows how to make a short stay feel special: a suite with room to breathe, friendly people, a courtyard full of palms, golf history everywhere you look, and downtown Chandler right outside the door. One night was not enough, and I am already looking for a reason to go back. Thank you to Jill Turski and the whole San Marcos team for a stay we absolutely loved.
